April 21, 2008More on Technology Education"If we don't teach this to them," Joan Fecteau, an MPS instructional technology leader, told me, "then we are doing as much of a disservice as not teaching them to read or write."Lauren Rosen Yeazel's recent words generated some interesting discussion on technology and schools. In my view, technology, per se, is not the core issue. Critical thinking and knowledge come first, then tools. Tools we purchase today will be long obsolete by the time our children graduate (maybe this argues for some technology presence in high school). Ideally, our schools should have fast fiber and wireless (open) networks, and as Momanonymous noted, perhaps teacher compensation might include a laptop/mobile device allowance. I am generally against teaching kids powerpoint, particularly before they've mastered the art of writing a paper.
