May 9, 2012Odyssey Project Graduation CeremonyYou are cordially invited to attend the graduation ceremony for students of the UW-Madison Odyssey Project Class of 2011-2012. Project Director Emily Auerbach and Writing Coach Marshall Cook will present certificates attesting to students' successful completion of six introductory UW credits in English. UW-Madison Interim Chancellor David Ward will make congratulatory remarks. From September to May, students in this rigorous humanities course have discussed great works of literature, American history, philosophy, and art history while developing skills in critical thinking and persuasive writing. The evening will include brief remarks or performances by each graduating student; recognition of supplemental teachers Jean Feraca, Gene Phillips, and Craig Werner; acknowledgment of Odyssey Project donors and supporters; and music and refreshments. Emily Auerbach and her colleagues deserve a big round of applause for their dedication to this program and their students. Posted by: Joan Knoebel at May 9, 2012 12:45 PMThis program is awesome. I would love to see MMSD embrace this model in its approach to teaching. The people in Odyssey are not much different from the MMSD students who we imagine cannot be taught because of poverty, life circumstances, home situations, etc. Emily Auerbach and the Odyssey program illustrate what can happen when a good (great in her case) is determined to make education happen.
