S.F. school board president abruptly resigns as city schools face yet another big challenge
The president of the San Francisco school board abruptly resigned Friday, citing health and personal reasons, a decision that adds another element of drama to a district facing one of the most difficult years in recent memory.
Lainie Motamedi submitted her resignation Friday morning, with her departure from public office effective as of noon.
Mayor London Breed will immediately appoint Phil Kim, a former teacher and public education administrator, to fill the position and serve until the next citywide election after this November. That could be a special election if one is called, or in June 2026.
Breed appointed Motamedi to the position in the wake of a divisive school board recall before she won election to the seat in 2022.
The resignation comes as the district faces the likely closure of schoolsacross the city and painful budget cuts needed to stave off insolvency and a state takeover.
