Kayla Huynh:

The McKenzie Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club will instead develop workforce programs for the school district “that combine academic rigor and workforce development,” McKenzie said in the statement.

“By leveraging each organization’s unique strengths and resources, we can better serve students and provide them with the skills they need to succeed,” McKenzie said. “It is my desire to have a plan worked out within a year with MMSD, the Boys & Girls Clubs, and our partners so that our workforce plan is the primary option our foundation can be proud to support.”

Johnson said in an interview Monday he hopes organizers can create a workforce training program as successful as the AVID/TOPS college preparation programs, which the Boys & Girls Clubs launched in the district over a decade ago. The program brings in over $1 million dollars a year for the district, Johnson said.

“If we can come up with something that’s suitable for all parties, then there might not be a need for a workforce high school,” Johnson said. “But if we’re not seeing any movement, we’re not saying (the charter school) is dead.”
