notes on university math teacher prep inadequacies

Kayla Huynh:

Most of Wisconsin’s teacher preparation programs fail to spend enough time training prospective educators how to teach elementary school math, according to a recent report.

The assessment contains findings similar to an earlier report that showed teachers who graduate from Wisconsin colleges are ill-prepared to teach reading.

Of the 22 Wisconsin elementary prep programs the National Council on Teacher Quality reviewed, just three dedicated enough time instructing undergraduate students how to teach the four key topics of elementary level math.

Madison teacher prep programs at Edgewood College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison did not meet the recommended standards, the report found. The council issued Edgewood College a “D” grade and UW-Madison a “B” grade.

Nationwide, 16% of 838 undergraduate programs in the review met the minimum instructional hours experts recommend to adequately prepare educators to teach math in elementary classrooms.
