September 22, 2011Proposed Madison Prep Academy needs to show proof of effectiveness of single-gender education to get grantThe state Department of Public Instruction is requiring backers of the proposed Madison Preparatory Academy to provide scientific research supporting the effectiveness of single-gender education to receive additional funding.I find this ironic, given the many other programs attempted within our public schools, such as English 10, small learning communities, connected math and a number of reading programs. Related: Co-Ed Schooling Group Study Assails Merits of Single-Sex Education and from Susan Troller: A newly published article by child development experts and neuroscientists blasting the trend toward single-sex education as "pseudoscience" won't help the cause of the proposed Madison Preparatory Academy. Are other DPI funded initiatives held to the same "standard"? The timing of these events is certainly interesting. 14mb mp3 audio. WORT-FM conducted an interview this evening with Janet Shibley Hyde, one of the authors. Unrelated, but interesting, Hyde's interview further debunked the "learning styles" rhetoric we hear from time to time. UPDATE: The Paper in Question: The Pseudoscience of Single-Sex Schooling: In attempting to improve schools, it is critical to remember that not all reforms lead to meaningful gains for students. We argue that one change in particular--sex-segregated education--is deeply misguided, and often justified by weak, cherry-picked, or misconstrued scientific claims rather than by valid scientific evidence. There is no well-designed research showing that single-sex (SS) education improves students' academic performance, but there is evidence that sex segregation increases gender stereotyping and legitimizes institutional sexism.Posted by Jim Zellmer at September 22, 2011 8:45 PM Subscribe to this site via RSS/Atom: Newsletter signup | Send us your ideas Comments
I've added an mp3 audio link to a WORT-FM interview with Janet Hyde, a UW-Madison professor and an author of the report in question. Funny the DPI never required this of, Discovery Math, Balanced Literacy, Reading Recovery, anything put out by Brunner, Fountas, Pinnell or Clay, whole language, mastery learning, or any of the other constructivist pish-posh that has been fed to our kids for the last twenty plus years. Posted by: Reed Schneider at September 23, 2011 9:23 AMAdd to that the Curricular waivers granted for Badger Rock last year. The disparate scrutiny by the public, the press, and others is quite noteworthy. Especially when one watches the videos from the Badger Rock decisions and discussions, and the videos of the Madison Prep discussions. One was the best thing since sliced bread, needed resources because it was innovative, and deserved a lot of leeway so that creativity isn't stifled. The other? Not so much. Not saying Madison Prep is flawless. Am saying that the same standards should apply to all charter proposals whether they make us comfortable or not. Posted by: Lucy Mathiak at September 24, 2011 9:40 PMTo add to Jim and Reed's list of fads with no scientific evidence of effectiveness. 1) Reading First "Whether they make us comfortable or not"...exactly what are you insinuating?
